The track bias all day had been inside and in or near the pace even if solidly run in one turn events and the only event that differed to produce the winner was when they went cut throats up front in Race 6 (1:08.87 for a Ratings 85 at 1200m). It should be noted however the second and third horses home in the 1200m event disputed that savage pace to confirm the manmade rampant track bias. This race here at Listed level saw those running one and two quinella the event with Antonio Lombardo getting the bob in by a nose on the outer under 59kg and the mare on the inner Shandream fighting hard for the girls. Third home was the mare Fix that had a sit behind the pace early but then lost her position and ran on late but the ride overall was ordinary from a tactical standpoint. A lot of the runners in this ran on too late and had no hope the way the track bias was in play today so several can be dismissed as having gone around. Kisses should have won for fun and the 5yo mare was a certainty beaten whatever way you look at it. She reared in the gates at the jump and was six lengths last early then tacked onto the back of the field across the top and had passed a couple turning for home but then when angled up the middle got held up. The way she speared through late for sixth (a long neck from fourth) was admirable indeed. If she had won then it would have seen on the ten race card that seven of the winners being either a 3yo (one) or 4yo (six) and the other three being 5yo mares. Seven of the field of twelve in this Listed sprint were mares. Six of the fifteen horse field in the G1 feature were mares and they ran an impressive first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh. Female gallopers totally dominate New Zealand racing.
