Ormond Memorial (G1)

Type: OPEN

This field was not very strong for a G1 third leg of the Triple Crown and is suspect even further because of the debacle at Hastings on Day Two where so many missed a run for this 2040m event at WFA. The repercussions of the abandoned second day after just three races ruined this race as a spectacle and for having no depth of note. The easy winner was Addictive Habit in 2:05.77 so the time was poor as they ran over three seconds quicker last year or over eighteen lengths superior. Addictive Habit was winning his first G1today and it should be pointed out he finished tenth in this last year beaten six and half lengths. It was his sixth attempt at G1 and the first time he has won having also never placed and overall was capturing his tenth victory from thirty-four starts. He was sat outside the leader and after taking the front at the 300m strode clear over the final 150m. Benzini ran on strongly from well back the inner and saving ground near the home turn. He is a more a handicap miler and middle distance type. Celebrity Miss, the stablemate of the winner, fought well for third after taking the trail and ironically after missing in G2 and G3 races so far she nabs a G1 placing Nashville ran on strongly as he does from the back and finished fourth but needed the pace stronger throughout to swamp them. He is still better than most going around at WFA at the moment even if a 7yo. It was his third go at the race having finished second in 2013, sixth last year and fourth this season though none of them have proven to be strong form races and this looks no exception. Authentic Paddy, more a wet track miler, led them up and finished fifth beaten less than four lengths which gives the race more perspective as being rather weak. He won a 2000m event the middle day, when just three races were held before the meeting was abandoned for slippage, with 59kg and beat Celebrity Miss that carried 5.5kg less. Today that mare finished third getting just 2kg relief from Authentic Paddy and beats him home by a lengths. Farm Boy was an honest sixth while Pondarosa Miss can be forgiven for her seventh beaten just over five lengths. Pondarosa Miss was held in the run home by Farm Boy and then the mare was checked before angled back inwards and running on a shade but the damage had already been done. This mare sustained a terrible injury here a year earlier when checked at this same track so you can forgive her on the possibility that incident was indelibly ingrained in her memory. Whether she can justify coming to Melbourne for the Cups after such an outing is debatable plus a riding change may need to be looked at as the mare should not ever be put in tight gaps or even try to shove anything out of the way. Thorn Prince was detonated way too soon by rider Jonathan Parkes and not surprisingly stopped to be beaten almost six lengths. He took off wide and fast from tenth at the 700m to attack for the lead across the top at the 600m to the home turn so was always going to fold up with such a Bonecrusher versus Waverley Star type move. Soriano was below par again even if she did find some traffic the run home but remember she finished third in this last year beaten two noses. The rest showed they are just handicappers. A dubious G1 all around and slowly run but also many of the combatants missed a run on the abandoned middle day of the Triple Crown carnival here. Addictive Habit had raced in Queensland over the winter before coming home so had a thorough grounding and it showed. The WFA campaigns are in disarray for many with the now rescheduled G1 mile from the middle day at Hastings that never eventuated on September 19 to be run at Trentham on October 24 or five weeks later. This G1 2040m at WFA is getting weaker by the year of late and many that contest the opening leg at 1400m and perhaps the mile on the middle day, when it is held, are never ever considered for this. It has lost its lustre and relevance with the 1400m at Hastings attracting the strongest field nowadays of the Triple Crown at Hastings.
