The winner of this Premier Hawkes Bay Hurdle (3100m) was Tommyra that raced fifth before going up second down the backstraight and then he took the lead across the top. He scored by half a length in 3:47.60 on Heavy10 footing and it was the ninth win in sixty-five starts for the 10yo gelding and was his fifth win as a hurdler. Three times he has now won a Premier Hurdle event. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were second (one-off the inside and length from the leader), co-leader (one-off the fence), led (four-off the inside and a neck in front), sixth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (four-off the fence and two lengths in front), led (twelve-off the inside and five lengths in front), led (thirteen-off the inside and eight lengths in front), second (six-off the inside and a neck back), fourth (seven-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and seventh (six-off the inside and four-lengths from the leader). Tommyra has had nineteen starts as a hurdler and apart from his five wins he has been placed five times and finished finished fourth four times. Second home was No Change that had run second in this Premier Hurdle event in 2018 and he had won it in 2019. He raced four or fifth then improved third wide across the top before turning for home fifth then was left fourth at the 250m. He then ran on to be at the 50m. Third home under 71kg was TallyhoTwinkletoe that sat last then improved wide across the top and was third and deepest turning for home. He got left second at the 250m then was third at the 50m and was beaten one length. A very close fourth home was Ali Baba that raced third the outer and was fourth turning for home and second at the 100m. He fought hard to be beaten just over a length. Senassy was the only other runner to finish and was beaten almost fifteen lengths after trailing on the inner early then stopping badly. Bak Da Master set the pace then was headed narrowly across the top before falling two fences from home when second. This was a close finish between the first four home and it would have been five runners but Bak Da Master fell at the 250m. The main thing to come out of this Premier Hurdle was that Tallyho Twinkletoe has since won both his Steeplechases at Riccarton (one a Premier Steeplechase) and is undefeated in this role both here and in Australia.
