The G3 1400m for fillies and mares under WFA only had nine runners compete on a testing wet Hawera track that saw some awful times all day posted. Francaletta finally got her blacktype win after two misses at G2 and G3 but today the Australian bred 5yo mare enhanced her broodmare worth tenfold. She sat second the outer and then took the front 300m out and then had only one rival to repel the threat from with 150m to go. She won by half a length in 1:26.77 to record her sixth win in eight starts and she clearly adores the 1400m with this being her fourth win in five outings at the trip. The time was almost a dozen lengths superior to any other 1400m held on the day. Aide De Memoire found this much easier than G1 at WFA versus all comers at her last start and she led up but could not withstand the victor in the run home. She did fight back well and went down trying hard, which is all that you can ask at this level. Underthemoonlight had also run at G1 under WFA versus all comers last start and finished a good fourth. Today she could only run a distant third beaten five lengths and when you consider she won this race last year by six lengths it tell you the pair ahead of her today are superior. Let Her Rip was the only other mare of some repute in the field and she ran an honest fourth albeit beaten almost six lengths. Rosewood and Slimline were not too bad but the gap to the rest was then big double-digits. This was a stronger field than last year for sure and will stand up better too this season and onwards. The top three home are the superior trio of mares and even the fourth finisher is the next best cab of the rank. The first four home all like at least some cut in the ground so this seemingly endless 2017 of wet tracks every week in New Zealand is suiting them just fine.
