Matamata Cup (LR)

Type: OPEN

The results at first glance for some would have seemed like a run on day but proper analysis shows it was more rider rating error that masked the fact just two leaders won and they scored in the final two events. The leaders in the first seven races on the card, with the margin to winner in brackets, shows that it was rider pace error and not track bias. R1 (second beaten a head), R2 (fifth beaten a length and a half), R3 (second beaten three quarters of a length), R4 (second beaten less than a length), R5 (fourth beaten just under three lengths), R6 (third beaten less than half a length) and R7 (fourth beaten three lengths). The expected quinella in the Listed feature here was the same order again and one of them was ridden smart and the other lost the race at the jump then unwittingly towed the other through and into contention, Atacama looks like she is a Cups mare at home this season as the mile today is within her range but it is middle distance that she can wreak havoc over spring, summer and autumn in New Zealand. The mare was eased back to the rear but got straight onto the slipstream of Chambord and he dragged her though the field and closer turning for home. Chambord was tardy for his rider Leith Innes, who is having trouble getting his mounts away cleanly of late. The winning time of 1:35.49 was the best on the day. The first two home will be winning more than once again this season. It was a better run by Joey Massino today when leading and finishing fourth so he is about to earn some more serious money soon. Smartly did okay all things factored in and Frankly was seen getting home well late after clipping a heel early. Pan Dulce was brave after a wide trip for most of the race and never really got a breather. Miss Mossman was terrible but the 4yo mare did get deadest slaughtered second up by her rider Craig Grylls, so forgive after such a pilot howler. She won the G1 NZ Oaks (2400m) on dry ground in 2:27.78 so the excuse given as needing rain-affected ground is simply not born out by facts. It is worth noting in this Listed (non claimable) event that five of the thirteen runners were ridden by apprentices.
