Canterbury Belle Stakes (LR)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This Listed 1200m race for 3yo fillies was run a strong clip and saw some big margins of defeat at the line for some form runners too. La Diosa came with a strong surge to win by a long head in 1:10.31, the best time of the day and superior to the Open Class sprint notably too albeit by just .5 of a second only. This filly was not too far away early but then got shuffled back quickly and ended up in the rear trio before unleashing strongly to get up with 25m to travel. She is by the super racehorse So You Think and he is leaving some nice types once they fill out their frames. It was her second win in just four outings with more to come as the distances increase it does seem. Starvoia the favourite tried hard to remain unbeaten and ran a brave second after sitting wide fourth and then taking the front 300m from home. O’Naturelle ran a sound third and the North Islander looks deliberately to have been left with improvement to come as she aims towards the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) on November 5 like many of these today. Expect a riding change for her closer to or on the dig dance day. What Choux Want was wide on the pace and wilted to fourth beaten four lengths but she is gradually finding form again this season. Wize Act ran on late for fifth and will handle more distance no worries. Zigwig was the big disappointment finishing second last beaten over ten lengths but deserves another chance as being crowded after a couple of hundred metres seemed to make her lose confidence and interest. The first three home were dominant and all have G1 ambitions here in the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) on November 5. The field was not large but looks a reasonable guide though more of these fillies are clearly sprinters rather than milers. The runner up in this event last year did go onto finish third in the G1 1000 Guineas.
