This G3 1200m only had ten runners and the youngest and least experienced runner in Carnival won in a ding donger. The 4yo mare was racing several grades out of her station today and after working up outside the pace sat a close second before winning by a head in 1:08.06. It was her fourth win in eight starts and came at her first ever blacktype attempt. She had won her prior start here at 1200m in 1:08.87 in a Ratings 75 carrying 53kg, so today was on paper at least racing three or four grades above her class and was carrying 53kg again. Passing Shot set the pace and the nine-win 6yo gelding could not hold out the mare that he gave just 1kg too but tried hard in a fresh up state. He was tried in Melbourne four times in 2016 and was found out big time at Listed level three times and an Open Handicap. Kinagat ran home strongly from back and wide for a close third while Signify fought on well for fourth under 59.5kg. Riding Shotgun fought well for fifth beaten just over two lengths after sitting sixth the outer in running. Scapolo the topweight at 60.5kg drifted to second last and was still there at the 200m before getting warmed up too late for sixth. The next three home were just fair and Passito was a distant last outclassed as a four-win mare and bear in mind the winner had won just three races to show the enormity of the win. This was a dubious G3 race for genuine depth and while the winner is just a 4yo mare so has it all ahead of her in theory she will likely struggle in the North Island. She however deserves her shot at the bigger time and at the moment the sprinting ranks in New Zealand are as empty a cupboard as imaginable so over Summer all will be answered.
