The Listed Open Handicap mile saw an all the way again on the Riccarton track for the visiting mare La Fille En Jeu. The 6yo mare prepared in the North Island led throughout to win a G3 for her own sex here two weeks prior. Today she ran clear in the lead and had a six length buffer on them midrace to the home turn before seeing that halve to three lengths at the 200m. At the line she had a half a length to spare and clocked 1:34.83 to win her ninth race from thirty-two starts and after trying many times for blacktype she has this year now won at G3 and Listed level and finished second at Listed level too. Tommy Tucker ran on gamely under topweight of 60kg after settling down fifth and kept coming gamely as he does. King Pin ended up second and chasing the clear winning leader so in effect was towing the field in pursuit and she only lost the runner up spot the final 10m. Residential raced third throughout and fought well to be beaten less than a length. Kolonel Kev kept closing from sixth on settling to finish a good fifth beaten just over a length. Boots 'N' All was running on okay from the rear while Scapolo never really got into the race after bounding in the air at the start plus the harder ground does not suit the rising 9yo. Laffaire plugged out widest and Sleek Secret dropped out a clear last from fourth on settling with the rider feeling the mare was indifferent in her action. Not a strong field as shown by King Pin, a four-win galloper able to finish third and narrowly miss second in a first ever attempt at Listed level.
