As with all fillies and mares blacktype races in New Zealand you can trust the formlines and use it as a reliable source for next season and so on plus this is the only G1 in a season for both. The winning time of 1:35.42 is the third slowest time since this race became a G1 event in 2001. It is no surprise the first two on settling formed the quinella and it turned out to be a sprint home, with a far lesser Ratings 75 on the card clocking 1:35.01 (two and a half lengths faster). The winning 4yo (a good age for the race) Say No More was already a G1 winner under handicap conditions against all comers, so when she got up outside the pace it made her prospects soar. Fleur De Lune was third last year beaten narrowly and second this year beaten a bee’s appendage, so her turn must come soon. Some of the efforts in the race were huge with the filly Xanadu monstrous from the back in a sprint home to get third. Lady Kipling was good and Fazzle outstanding, while the two unsung efforts came from Jeu De Cartes (has a big race in her next spring and not just at home so make a note now) and Villifye (never had a breather any stage). Rosie Myers was the third female rider to win this race since becoming a G1 and joins Lisa Allpress (Saint Cecile in 2001) and Sam Spratt (Captivate in 2007). She was also the second apprentice to win it with James McDonald scoring his first ever G1 win aboard Special Mission in 2008 when just a teenager. The vast majority of winners have been on pacers as the big flat Te Aroha track trends towards that racing style along with having a strong inside bias when the footing is decent. The 2012 result will be a serious formguide for bettors for seasons to come and breeders/buyers in the future.
