This G2 3yo 1400m was run at a frenetic pace throughout and it left a few more fancied rivals out the back, sad and sorry at the line. The strapping filly Serene Miss buried her rivals to win by half a length in a slick 1:21.16 on a day the times were bionic. To give some perspective a maiden winner in the prior race clocked a fraction quicker at 1:21.15. Serene Miss got a nice run midfield the outer and liked the slick clip as when she reached fifth at 200m her long legs then got into full stride. It was her third win in eight starts and her second success at G2 and she looks built to win the G1 1000 Guineas next as a mile will be ideal. The last start G2 winner Amarula ran a brave second and he loves either making a strong pace or chasing it. He towed the field up in essence so was a sitting duck when leading at the 200m and too his credit only got overhauled the final 25m. Stradivarius was third after being wide the whole way fifth and looks like one of those runner that is best doing overtime. He kept coming gamely to the line and was beaten threequarters of a length so considering the time his effort was stupendous. The eyecatching fourth and just missing third money was Ali Baba that leapt in the air at the jump and was a clear last on settling. He improved the inside but was still eighth turning for home and had to drive through between runners late in a tremendous effort. Ali Baba looks readymade for a G1 mile as long as some bad habits do not continue to creep in at the start. Rocanto fought well but had a dream sit so whether he is a miler in the making is a legitimate query. Billy Mojo, the stablemate of the favourite Serious Satire (finished last) and Rocanto, set a crazy pace and was trying to run the stuffing out of all and sundry. He finished sixth beaten just over two lengths so was not too bad considering the tactics. Scrutinize was another luckless runner and found the line late like he needs further now. A stumble early saw him get back on the inner but he improved midfield the fence midrace on a strong clip. He is still on track for the G1 2000 Guineas over a mile in twelve days but whether he can beat his stablemate Xtravagant is doubtful at the moment. Capella was warming up well late and has a future but will be given a wee break and should come back better next year. Del Rios got swamped late after being third throughout so has improved but perhaps not enough for some at this level. Battle Time the multiple Group placed maiden was a tad disappointing but still ran on although he was not his usual potent self at the finish. Let Her Rip disappointed and only got going very late but may need wetter footing to let go but bettors know a flop at Te Rapa, where she has won before, can always be excused such is the manmade bias here. Serious Satire the rising star filly was a total flop and finished a clear last so something not right and no surprise her trainer declared she would be spelled immediately. She has G1 written all over her but maybe in the autumn is where she will get some cut in the ground and be even stronger. Lots of reputations dented and the spelling paddock forced upon some but lots of names stood up and no surprise a filly is still able to beat the boys. Serena Miss looks a G1 winner this preparation and has the size and therefore constitution to handle the racing. Amarula beat the boys in the G2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas at his last start and Serena Miss nailed him late today to strengthen the performance worth albeit he was game in defeat. Stradivarius is the head scratcher as wide fifth throughout and still able to find the line for a close third in a fast time. He is tough no doubt but does not often put two good runs together so hard to get a line on him. On just this run alone it was the best effort of the race as he covered extra ground throughout. Ali Baba was not far behind him in fourth spot after blowing the start and losing more than the margin he was beaten. He did save ground the inner but came from eighth on the home turn and had to drive between runners late, so he should have won the event. There is not much between him and Stradivarius for the best non-winning effort in the race with the runs so different in nature but the fact is one covered more than 1400m than the other. Whatever was left standing after today do have more wins in store or stakes gathering for sure. How some will come through this might be an issue at their next start but that is yet to be shown and therefore known.
