The O'Leary's Fillies Stakes (LR)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

The wining time of 1:11.79 was sedate and a Rating 65 earlier ran over a length superior plus the track bias at Wanganui, as it always when the footing is reasonable, is rampant towards leaders and on pacers plus the inner. The first three home in this (apart from all being out of Australian dams) were in those positions on settling with the victor Avisto having a dream trail and getting off and up three-wide turning in. She took the length of the run home to get up by a nose and defeat the leader Second Time Lucky. Extra distance should suit Avisto more and no worries on wet ground so the filly, now prepared by Roger James, ticks a few boxes early into the season. Second Time Lucky keeps finding one better it seems but natural speed will always serve her well on biased tracks that greatly favour on pacers either normally or manmade (rail movements). Niki Piki Milo fought on well for third after she shied and tried to leap the crossing after 100m but soon got up outside the leader and thereafter shared the sedate pace. Eyesonyou was warming up late albeit ended up fourth in a gap at the post. Cryptic and Justa Secret both race in the same colours but for different yards and each have something to offer when the mile feature filly events or longer come up for grabs. The former got going okay late after striking trouble early then racing keenly the inner. The latter had to be used up early to get handy and lost her way when pushed wider by the eventual winner turning for home but she got going again late. Silk Belt drifted back to the rear on the inner and was disappointing at first glance thereafter but in a sprint home race on a venue with blatant track bias she is not the only one whose effort can be totally forgiven. She is a miler and middle distance type with Oaks aspirations in the autumn. Dubious form strength and relevance of this race mainly because the track was so biased and it was a sprint home event with no real pressure. There is some scope on breeding for several of these fillies but await a on truer run race and less helpful track towards one style of racing pattern before an informed judgement can be made.
