Madonna Mia looked a weight special on paper and so it proved to be in this Listed 2040m event on an off Wanganui track. The 6yo mare was winning her eighth race from thirty-six starts today and scored in this by almost four lengths clocking 2:05.18. She had won on this very track and grade five starts prior easily at 55kg so today at 54.5kg was absolutely thrown in. Her record in races from 2000m to 2100m is seven runs for four wins, a third, a fourth and a seventh beaten not too far. She had a dream run on the inner then worked off midrace before surging up and taking the lead before the home turn. The runner up Grey Guru ran home strongly from well back and the local nabbed second late from another closer in Tyne Cot. Rose Of Virginia ran on okay closer in and the visitor is close to some again. Blood Brother ran on late down the outer from well back while the rest were a gap away and well beaten. The winner should get a crack at 2400m if not this year then next as middle distance does seem to be her calling. Whether she will be as well weighted is doubtful after bolting in twice in the Foxton Cup and then Wanganui Cup in her last five outings.
