This Listed 1200m juvenile event saw the only dual-race winner in the field Hard Merchandize score by the barest of margins on a tricky wet track. Hard Merchandize trailed the leader Bombard (they were the only two males in a ten-horse field) throughout and after looking sure to finish second suddenly became a distinct threat with 50m to go. The gelding won by a nostril on the line in 1:16.16 to record his third success from five starts and gain a first piece of blacktype. All his wins have come on rain-affected footing so it is safe to say he is a wet tracker only. Bombard was game in defeat after taking the lead at the 900m and only got beaten on the line with the most telling fact being he and Hard Merchandize were almost seven lengths clear of the rest. Satin Belt sat second the outer and battled away distantly to hold onto third and the more valuable blacktype placing being a filly. Allure ran on well from the back to narrowly miss third and that more important blacktype placing for her record. Kaliper was an honest fifth after settling down last and taking a fence route the run home. She is a winner in waiting if seen again this season and certainly so next season when a 3yo filly with some ringcraft. Kate Louise was tardy and got back but plugged away so can be forgiven. Dance For Money is a total forgive after getting a horror run wide in the open working throughout while Electrode clearly despised the footing and specific loam at Wanganui. Not a very strong field at all with the first two dominant (notably the only two males in the field) but that could all change next season on better footing as some of the fillies in this are bred to improve in time.
