Dunedin Guineas (LR)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 3yo only 1500m saw Air Max repeat his win as a maiden of this age and Blacktype grade two weeks ago and show that was no fluke. The track was allowed to be released as a Good3 but that was simply not true as the times all day were very tepid and downright dreadful in some events. The winners and where they were turning for home in race order were second (outer and half a length from the leader), seventh (five-wide and three lengths from the leader), led (two lengths clear and one-off the fence), ninth (three-off the fence and three and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (two-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), led (inside and two lengths clear), second (one-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), sixth (inner and two lengths from the leader) and fifth (five-off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader). Air Max was fourth last away but improved the inner midrace and then worked off near the home turn only to be held up with a wall of rivals ahead. Once angled wider he pierced through like a hot knife on butter to be second at the 100m and then his superior momentum saw him lead with 50m to go. The gelding scored by three-quarters of a length in 1:31.20 to record his second success from six starts and both those wins have come at Listed level. Upscale ran a super second after getting back and wide and the filly really found the line in good style late. Highly Unlikely was always third or fourth the outer and improved wide near the home turn and actually led narrowly at the 100m but could not repel the closing surge or strength of the winner and runner up. Weaponry raced fifth or sixth and got held up the run home but drove through well late for fourth while Fire Show set the pace and fought well once headed narrowly at the 100m. Khimar War was not too bad from back and wide with the stablemate of the winner close to showing some form again. Superstatic from fifth or sixth the outer moved up fourth and four-wide before the home turn and fought on okay considering the earlier than usual deep move. Exemplar trailed the leaders on the inner but never really got full clear air the run home so he can be forgiven. Fox In Socks plugged home late from tenth on settling and the rest were outclassed. This was barely a Listed grade field and is South Island depth in effect even with a few modest at best North Islander visitors looking for soft Blacktype. A bigger and roomier track can see some of these form reverse as traffic did deny a few the run home from finishing closer.
