The winner at Listed level over 1400m was The Gift easily and once again she sat wide the whole way but drew clear on the Dead4 footing to score by almost two lengths in 1:23.99. The filly was fifth wide and went up third wide across the top before coming up ever deeper turning for home and then she led at the 200m. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fourth (two-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), third (three-off the inside and a length from the leader), seventh (seven-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (four-off the inside and a neck in front), fifth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (on the inside and length and a half from the leader), sixth (one-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (on the inside and a neck in front), fourth (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader) and sixth (seven-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader). The Gift today was winning her fourth race in a dozen starts and today was her first success at Listed level having run second twice beaten a head and a neck respectively. She deserved her Blacktype success as both her close seconds have also come when racing wide fifth or sixth and they came on Slow and Dead footing to show some versatility. The durability of this filly is not in doubt as she has had some tough wide runs for several starts in a row and she keeps coming back for more. Second home was Larpower that had prior to today never tasted defeat on raceday or at the trials. She once again was ridden by an apprentice and raced sixth wide with cover and came wider on the home turn before unleashing into second at the 100m. Today was her first try at Blacktype so it was a good result all around. Third home was Ocean Point, the stablemate of the winner, which raced fourth then fifth to the home turn then she fought on to get third the final 25m but was beaten over three lengths by the winner. It was her first Blacktype gained after twice finishing fourth at Listed level this campaign. Fourth home was Showemhowitsdone that settled second last on her own then she came widest and eighth turning for home before running on well from sixth at the 100m to get fourth the final 10m. She was beaten just under four lengths and in her two prior runs this campaign she had won at Listed level twice. Fifth home was the North Island raider Sweet Hunter that that raced wide on the pace early then second the outer and was third turning for home before wilting late to be beaten just under four and a quarter lengths. She was ridden by an apprentice. Next home was the Australian bred Kitty Cugat that was having her first go at Blacktype and she raced third then fourth the inner before working off and turning for home second. She briefly led at the 250m then wilted once headed 50m later and was beaten just over four and a quarter lengths. Seventh home and beaten less than four and a half lengths was Fettercain that was last on settling and ran on late wide out. The rest came in beaten over six lengths and up to over eleven and a half lengths. The winner is clearly very durable and sitting wide and working forward does not seem to bother the filly one iota. This was a stronger than usual Listed event in the South Island.
