Group 1-winning son of O'Reilly (Last Tycoon) Brutal will stand for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) on the Newgate Farm roster in 2020.
Bought for NZ$220,000 by Hawkes Racing from the draft of Mapperley Stud at the 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale, the colt is out of Group 3-placed mare Alberton Princess (Golan) making him a brother to Listed-winning filly Talaria.
Alberton Princess herself is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Te Akau Rose (Thorn Park) and Listed placed Dancing Bridges (Danske) - the dam of Listed winner Testarhythm (Testa Rossa), while she is also the half-sister to Alberton Rose (Danske) - who in turn produced Group 3 winner Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward).
Further back this is family of Group 2-winning pair Sir Alberton (Red Tempo) and Alberton Star (Stylish Century), with the latter the dam of Group 3 winner Lady Alberton (Golan) and Listed winner Alberton Park (Thorn Park) and last year's Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Wyndspelle (Iffraaj), who is also multiple Group 1 placed.
Trained by Team Hawkes, Brutal won five of his ten starts and over $2.6 million in prize money. The winner of his first three career starts, he scored a five length debut victory at two before adding the Mitchell McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Antler Luggage Plate (Listed, 1400m).
Resuming from a spell last February he was third in the Southern Cross Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and then finished second behind Winx (Street Cry) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m), before taking out the Doncaster Mile. After being brought back as a four-year-old Brutal won the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last spring.
"Brutal is just one of those extra special horses that showed rare talent from day one and to win a Doncaster at just his seventh start is something that only the really exceptional ones can do," said John Hawkes.
Brutal's highest Timeform rating was 122 following his second to Winx in the George Ryder.
