Outstanding Al Maher filly Delicacy got the timing right when she recorded her first Group One win on Saturday on the eve of the opening session of the 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale in Sydney.

It was fitting that Delicacy should win the G1 SAJC Australasian Oaks at Morphettville at her first start outside Perth as her dam Simply Wicked was purchased at last year’s sale at Newmarket.

Sold from the draft of Holbrook Thoroughbreds, Simply Wicked (Scenic x Street Talk) was purchased for only $4000 in foal to Al Maher by Scenic Lodge and subsequently gave birth to a full brother to Delicacy.

Delicacy joins the likes of G1 stars Black Caviar, Criterion, Kermadec, Sepoy and So You Think, who were all produced by mares after they were purchased from an Inglis Broodmare Sale in Sydney.

Delicacy, who has now won five races in succession including the G2 WA Oaks and G2 WA Derby at Ascot in Perth, took a big step in her fascinating career by winning the Oaks under relatively unconventional circumstances.

She had gone to the paddock to spell after her Oaks/Derby double before her owner and breeder Bob Peters had second thoughts after only four days and sent her back to trainer Grant Williams with instructions to prepare her for the Adelaide race.

Delicacy's race record now reads 13 starts for nine wins, one second, two thirds and $1,119,400 in prizemoney, all achieved in less than 11 months.

Williams suggested that Delicacy could be given the opportunity to back up against the colts in next Saturday's $500,000 SA South Australian Derby.

Delicacy is among 25 stakeswinners by Al Maher and is the fourth individual G1 winner sired by the son of Danehill, joining Fat Al, Diamond Drille and Almalad.

Like a very high percentage of Al Maher's black-type winning progeny, Delicacy carries two strains of the immortal Nijinsky, her third-dam being a daughter of Whiskey Road.

She is also the second classic filly Al Maher has sired from a Scenic mare, joining Becerra who was runner-up in the G1 Queensland Oaks.

Delicacy is the second foal and only winner from two foals produced by Simply Wicked, a daughter of the multiple Listed winner Street Talk (Marauding).

Simply Wicked was covered by Blackfriars last October after producing her Al Maher colt.
