Exceed And Excel; Written Tycoon; Choisir; E Consul; Redoute's Choice; Mossman; Dalakhani

• DANEHILL’s champion sire son Exceed And Excel added two new Group winners to his tally in Australia and the UK over the weekend.

At Randwick his 3YO filly Yattarna ( Exceed And Excel x Umaquest by Umatilla) recorded an upset win in the G3 James HB Carr Stakes at Randwick to give young trainer James Cumings the first leg of a Group double on the final day of the Randwick carnival.

It was Yattarna’s second win in nine starts, becoming her sire's 111th individual black type winner.

Yattarna was sold by her breeder Kambula Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $90,000 where she was purchased by Duncan Ramage’s DGR Thoroughbred Services.

Yattarna is out of the stakes-winning Umatilla mare Umaquest, who has produced four winners from four foals to race. Yattarna is her dam’s first stakes winner.

Umaquest has also produced an unraced two-year-old by Smart Missile and has a weanling filly by Written Tycoon. She was served by Not A Single Doubt in October.

Exceed And Excel sired his second new stakes winner when another 3YO daughter Marenko won the G3 Fred Darling Stakes at Chelmsford in the UK to take his total of stakes winners worldwide to 112.

A Cheveley Park Stud homebred, Marenko is out of the stakes-placed Pivotal mare Safina, who has produced two black type performers from two foals to race. Safina is a daughter of the great racemare and four-time G1 winner Russian Rhythm.

Exceed And Excel, who shuttles between Australia and Kildangan Stud, has sired 16 black type performers so far this year including three-time G1 winner Flamberge.

• WRITTEN Tycoon sired his 17th stakes winner when classy sprinter Music Magnate won the G3 Hall Mark Stakes first-up from a spell at Randwick.

Music Magnate (Written Tycoon x Concert Girl by Danehill Dancer) has now won five of his 10 starts and was stepping up to Group level for the first time after he underwent an operation during his spell.

Purchased for $NZ45,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Select Yearling Sale at Karaka by trainer Bjorn Baker, Music Magnate is out of Concert Girl, a half sister to G2 Wellington Guineas winner Marrok (Casual Lies).

His third dam Chaleyer (Covetous) was a multiple stakes winner of the G2 AJC St Leger and G3 Adrian Knox Stakes.

Concert Girl’s three foals to race all have won. She also has a two-year-old colt by Redwood and a yearling colt by the same sire.

• CHOISIR sprinter Choice Bro, a Group One winner as a 2YO in New Zealand, won the Listed Weetwood in Toowoomba on Saturday, making up for his third placing last year.

Choice Bro (Choisir x Ladidi, by Palace Music) was a $NZ50,000 purchase from the 2011 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale.

Originally trained at Matamata by John Sargent, Choice Bro was a leading two-year-old in New Zealand in the 2011-12 season when he won the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and G3 Platinum Homes 2YO Classic and was fourth in the Karaka Million.

He joined the Tony Sears stable in Queensland last year and has now won seven of his 47 starts with prizemoney in excess of $535,000.

Choice Bro is the best of five winners from Ladidi, a half-sister to stakes-winner Cult Figure.

He is the seventh Australian stakes-winner this season for Choisir, whose progeny have amassed over $6 million in earnings putting him ninth on the Australian General Sires List.

Choice Bro’s winning half-sister Exceed And Excite (Exceed And Excel) will be offered in foal to Star Witness at the Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale.

• SALE bound Melbourne mare Precious Gem boosted her value when she became the third stakes winner by her sire E Consul at Caulfield on Saturday.

Precious Gem, placed five times in stakes company, broke through for a black-type success for trainer Henry Dwyer in the Listed TROA Anniversary Vase (1400m).

She is entered for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale but may have a tilt at the G1 Tatts Tiara in Queensland in June.

The six-year-old was formerly trained by Gwenda Johnstone and won two wins of her four starts for Dwyer.

"She came to me in terrific condition, really sound - testament to Gwenda Johnstone, who looked after her early days. You don't see horses in her condition at her age now,” Dwyer said.

• TASMANIAN Derby placegetter Howard Be Thy Name won Saturday’s Listed Port Adelaide Guineas at Morphettville to provide his champion sire Redoute’s Choice with his 130th stakes winner.

Howard Be They Name, trained by Darren Weir, is out of the Faltaat mare Bellini Rose.

• A colt by Redoute’s Choice made the top price of $80,000 on the first day of the VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale in Melbourne on Sunday.

More than 70 individual buyers pushed the sale average for 108 lots sold to $19,370, an increase of 42% from the first day in 2015.

The Redoute’s Choice colt was purchased by Frankie Stockdale. He is the first foal of Hussonet mare French Alliance, and was offered by Morning Rise Stud.

Stockdale said the colt would entered for the Sydney Ready2Race Sale in October.

• MOSSMAN sired his 33rd stakes winner when his 2YO gelding Crack Me Up won the Listed Dalrello Stakes at Toowoomba.

Crack me Up is from the quality Danehill mare Chuckle.

• DALAKHANI import Guardino stamped his class on the G3 Japan Racing Association Plate at Randwick on Saturday, recording his first Australian win for the Lee and Anthony Freedman stable.

French-bred Guardini (Dalakhani x ) will now head towards the G2 Brisbane Cup at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Guardini was a G2 winner in Germany and G3 winner in France. He was second in the G3 Easter Cup at Caulfield at his previous start.

Yattarna began well from her wide barrier (12) and she soon crossed to the lead. She then steadied the tempo (first 800m in 48.82) before lifting the pace on passing the 600m. She eased a bit deeper on turning for home and then sprinted too well (last 600m in 34.83), fighting back to score a good win. No More Tears was seventh on the rails, got along the inner on turning for home, going through to challenge at the 200m. She then battled well for a good second. Lady Sniper raced outside the leader (Yattarna), challenged strongly at the 200m and fought well for a close-up third. The favourite Pearls raced back in tenth place, eased wider and into clear running at the 200m and made good ground for (2.1 lengths) seventh, putting up a sound effort under her top weight (57kg) especially considering the sprint-home conditions of the race.
