Her mum was a talented sprinter, but Private Legacy is showing signs she could be a handy miler.

Multiple stakes placegetter Private Secretary was a bonny mare for Greg Hickman, and he is hoping the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree. 

Hickman has enjoyed good results buying horses out of mares he has trained and when he spied a filly out of his $1 million earner at last year's yearling sales, he felt compelled to check her out. 

Hickman not only liked the filly by The Autumn Sun on pedigree, he also admired her on type, snapping up the horse now known as Private Legacy for $90,000. 

"Private Secretary could gallop, that's the number one thing, and she held a special place in our hearts," Hickman said. 

"I always thought The Autumn Sun was a great racehorse and I don't see why he wouldn't be a chance of being a stallion too. 

"She's a different type to the rest of the family where she looks like she's going to get a mile plus. 

"But she has done very well, she's got a great temperament and she's just a nice filly." 

Private Legacy made an encouraging debut when runner-up over 1200m at Newcastle last month and again caught the eye late when flashing home for fourth to spring carnival hopeful Taormina over the same journey at Warwick Farm. 

The 1400 metres of Saturday's Inglis Race Series Closing Handicap looks made to order and from a midfield draw, Hickman is hoping for another competitive performance. 

"At Newcastle, she probably should have won with a little bit of luck. Things just didn't work out our way," Hickman said. 

"When she ran fourth, she beat home horses whose trainers have big opinions of them, and the ones who finished in front of her, they have bigger opinions of. 

"Her work was good on Tuesday and she is going to get into the race with 52-1/2 kilos. 

"Hopefully it's long enough for her." 

Private Legacy will be Hickman's sole runner with stablemate Johnny Be Swift scratched from the same race after drawing off the track.
