Blacker and Radley double up

3 minute read

Devonport double for Blacker & Radley.

John Blacker and his promising apprentice Jackson Radley picked up a double in Devonport on Sunday, winning two legs of the quadrella with Power Magnum ($10), taking out the 1150m BM60 and Alpine Blast ($6), taking out the 1350m BM60.

Both horses enjoy racing on the synthetic, Power Magnum has scored all four career wins on the surface while Alpine Blast has had six of his seven wins in Devonport.

"He's been racing well in BM68's in Launceston, so dropped back to a BM60 with a claim on him and his favourite track, good barrier draw, and he had the run of the race, and he won well," Blacker said.

Quite a few of Blacker's horses perform at their best on the synthetic surface, and he plans to keep racing them in Devonport over the winter months.

Gie it was a solid win

After an encouraging second placing in Devonport on 24 April, Gie It Laldy ($4.20) went one better and opened her account at start number five, taking out the 1150m maiden.

From a low draw, Anthony Darmanin settled the 4YO much closer to the speed and gained an inside run to hit the front early in the straight, and then held off the fast-finishing challenges from Lightmeupjazz ($2.90) and Sienna Wolf ($7).

"We actually got to the front a little bit too soon, probably not the way to ride this horse; I think she prefers to chase, but she toughed it out and got the job done," Darmanin said.

"I think Marion (Dalco, trainer) is doing a great job. Last start put the writing on the wall. Hopefully, now she will step up in distance and probably be ridden a little differently."
