Today’s Horse Racing Tips - 5th January 2024

3 minute read

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 5.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Canterbury, Ballina, Wagga, Cranbourne, Stawell, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Esperance and Hobart.

CANTERBURY: RACE 3 @ 7:00 PM

YVETTE (10) looked a good thing beaten on debut three weeks ago over this course and distance, never getting a proper crack at them but still finishing less than a length from the winner. Should settle in a beautiful spot from this gate and she can set the record straight this evening. AUSBRED MIMOSA (6) is a lightly raced four-year-old who found the line well to get up for third when resuming over this distance at Warwick Farm a month ago. Genuine mare who will sit back off the pace then let down late. ANINI (12) backs up quickly after a pleasing effort first-up over 1000m at Kembla last Saturday. Could be a surprise packet at odds. Recent Rosehill trial winner MAGIC LEPRECHAUN (1) is one to monitor carefully in betting on debut. DECISIVELY (9) first up for Waller/McDonald has been well found in early markets and should run well.
SELECTIONS: Hard to go past Yvette.

WAGGA: RACE 3 @ 2:25 PM

PROJETO (5) was too good at Corowa first-up with the form out of that race being franked, before heading to Moonee Valley and not finishing far away. Back to this grade looks to suit and the wide draw shouldn't be an issue. Can continue to work through the grades. LIGHT PRESS (3) just missed at Albury 20 days ago, continuing her good run of recent form. Was good on the soft track two starts ago and may prove tough to catch from up front. MOOSHAKA (4) has been around the mark of late after a good win three starts ago. Must be included. GOTTA PULSE (9) does a lot wrong but looked better in his recent trial at Corowa. Best form has him right in the finish.
SELECTIONS: Backing Projeto.

CRANBOURNE: RACE 3 @ 7:15 PM

KNENTII (1) has been knocking on the door of a maiden victory hitting the top-four in all five runs this preparation and strikes a very winnable contest here. The step-up to the 2600m looks ideal and gets the services of Mertens in the irons. Looks very hard to toss. UNSKINNY BOB (6) put in a career best performance when runner-up last time out and gets plenty of weight relief with the 4kg claim. Expecting another big run. SUNFLOWER GIFT (9) just ran into one better last time around but will be near peak fitness now. Top-three candidate. CERES MIST (7) is drawn to get a soft run in transit from gate two and may fill the frame. ROLLING THUNDER (4) next in line in a race with only a handful of chances.
SELECTIONS: Knentii to finally break through.

STAWELL: RACE 4 @ 3:30 PM

AMENOPHIS (1) wasn't too far away when resuming and has won second-up before. Got up to Listed level when last in work and should have the class to feature prominently in a race like this. BLACK SAMURAI (6) drops back in trip but will be rock-hard fit for this and a sharp improvement is expected. SPORTS IDOL (4) is a two-time winner over this mile journey and gets the services of Yendall in the stirrups. Cannot be ignored. BOSS CONI (5) next best in a race with only a handful of chances.
SELECTIONS: Amenophis to win.

SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 6 @ 8:38 PM

CHARLIE'S CASE (1) came home strongly when resuming last start to finish third, beaten 1.3 lengths over 1350m at Doomben. Races well second up so should be improved. Looks hard to hold out in this suitable assignment. QUEST OF QUESTS (9) has improved with racing this time in and delivered an impressive win over 1350m at Ipswich last time. Going well and will be at peak fitness. Expected to be competitive again. LADY LE DA (5) is back after a break of six months and is looking to emulate her win at Ipswich when returning from a spell last prep. Has trialled and is among the better hopes. SHIPS AHOY (6) took his strike rate at this venue to 50 per cent when leading throughout last time. Respect.
SELECTIONS: Fresh placegetter Charlie's Case to progress and win.

MACKAY: RACE 5 @ 3:57 PM

VIENNAWAITSFORYOU (9) has switched from a Brisbane barn on a 37-day return. She was only beaten 1.6L at Ipswich third-up and that reads well in this company. It's tough to risk the Stanley-Taylor linkage and the filly should be winning. SERGEANT'S PRIDE (4) was narrowly beaten here and then resumed at Rockhampton and got too far back. Expect him to sit handier and he will be much sharper with that run under the belt. The second-up record is good. JUST BINGO (1) debuts for the Taylor barn and has the rail. Has a solid trial under the belt and Butler is an able substitute for Stanley. Has the blinkers on an keep very safe. EYES ARE LION (6) has been around the mark without winning. Has to manage a wide barrier but should be around the mark.
SELECTIONS: Backing Viennawaitsforyou.
