Nation stops for Emirates Melbourne Cup

3 minute read

The Melbourne Cup Carnival’s hallmark event, the Emirates Melbourne Cup, attracted 100,794 racegoers to Flemington today to celebrate the ‘race that stops a nation'.

Protectionist cemented its name in history today when Ryan Moore rode the Andreas Wöhler trained horse to claim Germany’s first Emirates Melbourne Cup and the lion share of the $6.2 million prize pool.

The evergreen Red Cadeaux, ridden by Gerald Mosse and trained by Ed Dunlop, finished second for a heartbreaking third time in its fourth ' and almost certainly for the final ' start in the race. Three-time Cup winning jockey Glen Boss finished third on the Chris Waller trained Who Shot Thebarman.

Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Acting Chief Executive Julian Sullivan said Emirates Melbourne Cup Day lived up to its reputation as Australia’s most celebrated sporting event.

“Flemington was at its best for the 154th running of the Emirates Melbourne Cup with perfect weather, exhilarating racing, fabulous fashion and entertainment attracting a strong crowd to the track for the illustrious race,” said Mr Sullivan.

Hundreds of beautifully dressed women competed in the Myer Fashions on the Field with Christine Spielmann, 28, from Holtze in the Northern Territory crowned the Women’s Racewear title for Emirates Melbourne Cup Day. Ms Spielmann wore a bright blue, lime, emerald green and black bespoke Nadia Foti ensemble with a blue laser-cut, anodized aluminum millinery piece by Joanna Roberts and black accessories and will now compete on Crown Oaks Day for the Victorian title.

The VRC’s invitation-only Design Award was presented to Victorian Anthony Capon, 30, who showcased a black and white check-print on model Ellie Lemons with pink hair accentuated by a draped large bow on the right shoulder, Tony Bianco shoes and an Olga Berg clutch.

VRC and Emirates special guest, international model Gigi Hadid, was stunning on Emirates Melbourne Cup Day in a custom designed blush pink Alex Perry outfit with an embellished Hat Maker head piece among a flurry of local and international celebrities in the Birdcage enclosure.

The exclusive Birdcage also hosted Ronn Moss, Jordan and Zac Stenmark, Kate Waterhouse, Frances Abbott and Spandau Ballet at Emirates; Erykah Badu at Lavazza; Rich Sommer at Bar Schweppes, Lleyton and Bec Hewitt at Swisse; Cadel Evans at House of Boag’s; and Bambi Northwood-Blyth at G.H. Mumm.

Metro reported that more than 52,910 racegoers travelled by train to Flemington.

Mr Sullivan extended the VRC’s sympathies to the connections of Admire Rakti, which passed away suddenly in its stall.

“The VRC has welcomed many international visitors who accept the challenge to win the race that stops a nation and is saddened that Admire Rakti’s campaign ended in this way,” Mr Sullivan said.

The 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival will continue on Thursday with Crown Oaks Day, where the Fashions on the Field Victorian winner will be crowned with more than 65,000 expected for the Carnival’s ‘Ladies Day’.

Protectionist was ridden quietly in the early stages by Ryan Moore, settling midfield on the rails in the 22-horse field. He then drifted further back as the tempo increased and was 17th, one off the rails at the 1200m. He improved to about tenth on turning for home, got a split on passing the 300m and showed a surprising turn of foot to hit the lead at the 200m and then raced away to win most impressively by four lengths in fast time (3.17.71). He is an exceptionally high quality stayer. Red Cadeaux was magnificent at his fourth Cup attempt. He travelled nicely in seventh place, one off the rails, moved up well (with cover) nearing the home turn, hit the lead at the 400m and fought on gamely for second after being overhauled at the 200m for yet another Melbourne Cup placing. Who Shot Thebarman travelled well in tenth place on the rails, improved between runners at the turn, going to third at the 300m. He then continued to fight on in good style, holding on to take the minor placing, beaten four and a half lengths in a solid staying performance. It was also a very good ride by Glen Boss. The lightly weighted Signoff (51.5kg) was handily placed, about tenth between runners and was travelling well coming to the 600m. He moved up well rounding the home turn, challenged at the 300m but just fought on from that point to finish a sound (6 lengths) fourth probably just lacking the class of those that finished in front of him after being given every opportunity by Joao Moreira. Willing Foe was about 12th between runners, got a nice run through at the home turn going to fourth at the 300m before battling on for (7 lengths) fifth. Precedence came from 15th at the 600m, running on soundly for a good (8 lengths) sixth at his fourth Melbourne Cup attempt while Araldo ran on quite well from the tail of the field for (9.2 lengths) seventh. Fawkner was nicely placed most of the way and had clear running from the 300m but then struggled to run out the trip in finishing tenth, beaten just under 13 lengths. Lucia Valentina travelled well midfield on the rails but was under riding nearing he home turn and looked tested by the 3200m in finishing (16 lengths) 13th. My Ambivalent led and set a quick tempo to the turn before tiring for 17th while the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Admire Rakti surprisingly raced close to the pace in second place most of the way to 600m and looked to be travelling well at that stage but was suddenly under pressure at the turn and dropped out to finish a distant last. He subsequently caused his handlers come concern and tragically collapsed and died on his return to the stabling area.
