The Charlie Appleby-trained, Godolphin-raced gelding Francis Of Assisi impressed at his first Australian start with a decisive win here. He began well and settled nicely outside the leader (Go Dreaming), travelling at a reasonable tempo. He moved up well nearing the home turn, went to the front on straightening. He then raced clear and went on to win easily, running the 2400m out strongly. Second Bullet had a good trip in fourth place, one out and one back. He was under riding at the home turn and then kept battling on, without looking likely to trouble the winner, for second. The favourite Our Century settled back in last place in the nine-horse field, went deep from the 700m, got to fourth at the 200m and kept battling on well, without threatening, to finish third. Bring Something raced back in eighth place on the rails, got between runners at 300m and kept plugging on for (6.9 lengths) fourth while Howard Be Thy Name never looked dangerous, just battling on for (7.1 lengths) fifth after being seventh at the 600m.
