Promising Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Assimilate has now raced seven times for three wins and he did well in scoring his first stakes win here. He was eased from his outside barrier by Tye Angland and settled near the tail of the 12-horse field before improving (deep) at the home turn. He then sprinted well, took the lead at the 50m and went on to score with something in hand. John Thompson-trained gelding Primitivo did now show any early pace and after being a distant last, he fanned deep (under riding) at the home turn. He then responded, producing a late-closing second, making up many lengths. He should appreciate further and is a horse to watch. The filly Waimea Bay raced back in eighth place, sprinted well on straightening, got to second at the 100m and then battled on nicely for third.
