Trainer Pat Carey looks to have promising stayer on his hands in Durnford. The son of Helenus was second last in the ten-horse field before Kerrin McEvoy took the four-year-old to the extreme outside at the home turn. He was giving the leaders six lengths at the 400m but showed a good turn of foot to grab a good win at the post. Tuscan Fire led and fought off a strong challenge (from White Universe) early in the straight, but couldn’t halt the late bid of the winner, finishing a very honest second with 59kg. Elusive King was about seventh one off the rails before improving, three wide, from the 600m. He got to fourth at the 200m then battled on for the minor placing. The outsider Montgomery was near the rear on the rails and gained an inside run at the turn before finishing, late, for fourth. Westsouthwest was handy on the rails and held on for fifth, while the Peter Moody-trained White Universe came from about fifth to challenge the leader (Tuscan Fire) from the 600m. They had a great battle before he stopped quickly with 150m to go, finishing sixth.*ANZ
