The Toby Edmonds-trained gelding The Virginian scored a good first up win. He settled back towards the tail of the 14-horse field, before tracking up well approaching the home turn. He switched deeper on straightening, put in a strong run, hit the front at the 50m and went on to win quite impressively. Highly Geared was smartly away, raced handy to the leaders, was fourth at the home turn, challenged at the 100m and the fought on well for second. The outsider Quelle Liaison went back from her outside barrier (14) and raced at the tail on the field before switching deeper halfway down the straight, coming with a strong run to grab third.
