Having his first start beyond 1600m and with four wins and three placings in only eight starts, Divine Unicorn appears more than promising with a fine maiden stakes winning run here. In a tidy ride by Jim Byrne he settled third (rails) with a circuit to run, remaining handy, camped in behind the pace down the back and approaching the last corner. Byrne moved him away from the fence into the straight and got the split at the 300m, drove through before the 100m and had them covered to the line by a very comfortable length. Favourite Tradesman moved up to third at the 600m, made a line of three at the 300m, led narrowly soon after then kept going to the post but was not able to match the winner. Jumbo Prince led into the straight, was tackled at the 200m and fought well to hold third. From well back My Diamantine lunged into fourth late, almost nabbing third.
