The Bjorn Baker-trained Music Magnate, last year’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1350m) winner, staged a good and timely effort in winning here. Having his fourth run this preparation, he soon went to front, set a good tempo and held a good break at the 300m. He then went on to score impressively, looking set for another successful Queensland carnival. Hopfgarten raced back in fourth place, moved up well at the 200m and then fought well for a good second, without really troubling the winner. Miss Cover Girl raced in second last place, on the rails, in the small six-horse field. She got between runners at the 300m and then battled on well for third. Takedown raced outside the leader (Music Magnate) but weakened on passing the 300m to finish (3.9 lengths) fourth, performing below his best on the Soft 7 track.
