The Queensland-trained mare Fire Up Fifi was eased from her wide barrier (15) and raced in third last place to the 700m. She improved (wide with cover) rounding the home turn, went to the centre of the track at the 300m and then put in a quick dash to grab the lead at the 50m. She then went on to score by a neck, putting up a good effort. The favourite Peron was smarty away from her difficult barrier (11) and was handily placed, third and fourth, but was trapped three wide without cover most of the way. She challenged at the 300m and looked the winner when she took the lead at the 200m. But her early efforts told, and she was headed nearing the post to finish (neck) second. It was a sound performance. Catkins had a good trip, third on the rails most of the way to the turn. She challenged at the 300m then held on for (one length) third, after having every chance. Lady Sententia went back to last from her outside barrier (16). She remained there to the 600m, fanned very wide rounding the home turn and made a lot of ground in the closing stages for fourth. *ANZ
