Geelong-trained three-year-old gelding Astro Castro was a surprise $101 winner on debut. He settled in seventh place, racing in the centre of the track. He improved from the 300m, got to second at the 100m and finished well to score in promising style. Tyrannize was just behind the leading group, about eighth, sprinted quickly from the 300m and looked the winner when he took the lead at the 100m but he could not hold off the late closing winner. Godolphin-raced colt Badajoz was eased by Craig Williams from barrier two and went across the field towards the group in the centre of the track, racing in a midfield position. He got a split and at the 200m and then battled nicely to take third.
