Robert Hickmott-trained imported stayers filled the placings with victory going to the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin. Having his second run this preparation, he settled back in tenth place (on the rails), behind a strong tempo set by stablemate Granddukeoftuscany. He improved nicely nearing the home turn, got through on the inner to take the lead at the 300m, and then raced away to score most impressively, carrying 61kg top weight. Favourite Crocodile Rock was back in fourth place, moved up nicely at the 300m, and then fought well for second, having no chance with the winner who conceded him 7kg. Aloft was back in sixth place, commenced a move on straightening, and kept running on quite well, getting up in time to gain third in a photo.
