Tasmanian Jerilderie Letter, recent winner of the Hobart Guineas (Listed, 2100m) and Tasmanian Guineas (Listed, 1600m), fought back gamely to defeat the Victorian challengers for a popular local result. He settled well back in third place, improved nicely nearing the home turn, took the lead at the 200m and then dug-deep to score a really good win. Darren Weir-trained Howard Be Thy Name raced in fourth place, tracking the eventual winner, looked a serious threat when he challenged strongly at the 100m and then battled well for a good second, just finding the winner a bit too good. Patrick Payne-trained Al Shameel went to the front, ran along at quite a good tempo. He fought well when challenged, was headed at the 200m and held on to take the minor placing in a sound effort.
