The former WA-trained gelding Hazzabeel, having his second run this preparation since joining the Ciaron Maher stable, scored a very smart win here. He was slowly away, was last early on before settling in ninth place behind a strong pace. He commenced a wide move approaching the home turn, raced to the front halfway down the straight and drew away to win impressively. Inspector settled back in eighth place (one off the rails), before improving (deep) from the 600m. He challenged at the 200m and then battled on well for a sound second, having no chance with the winner. The favourite, The Chairman raced in sixth place, one off the rails, before improving well nearing the home turn.
