The promising Lion Of Belfort settled in a good spot, sixth one off the rails, racing a little keenly due to the moderate early pace (first 600m 36.40). He was hemmed between runners nearing the home turn but Damien Oliver angled him into the clear rounding the home turn. He came with a strong finishing run to take the lead at the 50m, he then drew clear to win nicely by just over a length and a quarter. It was a good win. The SA-trained Nite Rocker raced outside the leader (Clevadude), got to a narrow lead at the 100m and then battled on well for second. Another SA-trained three-year-old Hucklebuck ($3.50 favourite) raced in seventh place on the rails but was blocked for clear running until switched across heels passing the 100m marker. He then finished well, late, for an unlucky third. It was his first defeat in three starts. Washington Square was handy all the way and held on for fourth. *ANZ
