After racing well without winning, veteran stayer Who Shot Thebarman broke through for his first win since November 2015 in scoring here. He challenged (four deep) rounding the home turn, hit the front at the 100m and then fought back strongly to win well, now looking set to head to Flemington for his fourth attempt at the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on Tuesday week. His stablemate Libran raced last place, improved (wide with cover) rounding the home turn, challenged at the 100m and then battled strongly for second. Cismontane went to the front, set a moderate pace before lifting the tempo from the 800m. He was challenged at the home turn and kept fighting on gamely to take a good third. The favourite Big Duke had a good trip in third place on the rails, was under riding nearing the home turn and kept battling on well, but in restricted room, to finish (2.1 lengths) fourth.
