Counterattack jumped from barrier five with the field but drifted to be second last one off the rails when they settled. On straightening, Counterattack angled out and kept moving out into the centre of the track and at the the 200m he was the most dangerous challenge to leader Spill The Beans. He levelled up at the 100m then forged clear by three quarters of a length at the line, the jockey putting the whip away for the last few strides. Spill The Beans made all the running and had two lengths on the field past the 600m and tried to break clear at the top of the straight. He still led, narrowly, at the 200m but the winner was too strong in the last 100m, but fought well. Hellbent, the favourite, was shuffled back approaching the turn and was blocked for run well into the straight. When the leader hugged the rails, Hellbent had to wait and while he found room late he never made much impression on the first two, battling on for third.
