The James Cummings-trained filly Villa Carlotta put up a really promising effort in winning here on debut. She was eased from her wide barrier (8) and settled in sixth place (wide with cover) before improving nearing the home turn. She fanned deep on straightening, took the lead on passing the 200m, was briefly headed but lifted well, fighting back for a good win after a wide trip. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Faeger settled in last place in the eight-horse field, went widest of all on straightening, briefly hit the front at the 150m before fighting on for a promising second on debut. Pahruli settled in second last place, on the rails, was shuffled back to last at the 300m and then kept running on well to take third in a sound effort on debut. The $1.75 favourite Alizee, a half-sister to 2016 Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Astern (Medaglia D’Oro), settled in fifth place, between runners, was blocked in the early part of the straight but then battled on when clear over the closing stages to finish (2.7 lengths) fourth.
