British-bred import Evangelist put up a nice effort here, recording his second win in 11 starts since coming to Australia and at his first start since May. He settled about ninth on the rails from his good barrier (3) and was a distant seventh at the 600m, chasing a strong pace as he commenced to improve. He got to third at the 200m and kept running on, getting up in time to score a narrow but good win. Harada Bay was shuffled back and in the early stages and was a distant seventh at the 600m. He got a split on turning for home, hit the front on passing the 100m, only to be run down nearing the post for a good second. Streets Away was a distant fifth, one off the rails at the 600m. He was under riding on straightening and kept fighting on well to take a sound third. Favourite Akavoroun was handily placed on the rails in a muddling early tempo before driving through to take the lead. He then ran along at a strong tempo, quickly setting up a big lead, which he maintained until well into the home straight before tiring in the closing stages to finish (1.6 lengths) seventh.
