Jackson drew the outside in the ten horse field and jumped with them but was forced to drop back. Approaching the straight, he was stuck out four wide and second last yet not letting the leaders get too far in front. Into the last 400 metres, he balanced up and began to make strong headway at the leading bunch out in the middle of the track and continued closing in last the 200 metres. At the hundred metres he edged up and did better than those on his inner to grab the lead two strides from the line for a good win, especially as he was wide all the way. Soviet Secret saved ground rounding the corner and got a nice run through passing the 200 metres and looked the winner inside the 100 metres. Emphatically raced wide but handier than the winner around the corner then waited until the 200 metres to make his run and didn’t give way in the last 100 metres for a battling third.
