After showing promise with three placings from his first six starts, John Thompson-trained colt Cuba broke through for his first win here. He began well, soon went to the front and then settled well, steading the tempo. He got a break rounding the home turn and had enough in hand to hold on for a good win, sprinting home his last 600m in 34.60. The Chris Waller-trained colt Higher Ground made a promising debut. He settled in fifth place, went a distant third (under riding) at the home turn before running on really well for second, looking suited to further. He is a horse to watch.
