Lawnmaster Eulogy Stakes (G3)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This G3 for 3yo fillies over 1550m was run at a solid clip throughout and saw the two most favoured runners quinella the event. Savvy Coup came with a good sustained surge from eighth on settling and getting a nice cart into the race near the home turn before being drawn wide and primed to unload. Her rider pushed the unleash button and the response was potent as she threatened at the 200m and reached second at the 100m before momentum took the front 50m out. She won by half a length in 1:32.37 and that was the best time of day notably with it superior to a Benchmark 85 of older horses by two and a half lengths. It was her third win in eight starts and first piece of blacktype after two failures earlier in her career but she has clearly come solid with racing and as the tracks have dried out. In her last four outings she has won three times and finished a close second the other time. She is expected tackle a G1 mile for her age group next month and then be set for the G1 NZ Oaks (2400m) in the Autumn safely through that. Dijon Bleu sat sixth and moved wide before the home turn then was unleashed the run home and led at the 100m but could not hold out the winner that came with her down the outer. She had her chance to win but is racing so consistently it is hard to give her a break but the better tracks will soon start to take a toll. The luckless runner was Contessa Vanessa that trailed the leaders on the inner and then got held up turning for home and only got into clear air to detonate fully the final 100m. She was beaten over two lengths but may well have won if not having to wait for so long the run home before able to lengthen out fully. Larima ran on stoutly from second last and had only cleared maidens prior to this so has upside for sure. Craggy Range, a maiden, set the constant clip and after being headed at the 300m she was still third at the 100m before being swamped late to finish fifth beaten just over four and a half lengths. Divine Power sat outside the leader and briefly led at the 300m before wilting. In The Clear was not too bad and Satin Belt after being wide throughout fifth then fourth across the top and third turning for home had to feel the pinch after such an overland outing. Lady Rossa was just fair and the rest outclassed or the better footing not suitable. Savvy Coup had Dijon Bleu covered and had more left on the line but to be fair the latter had not raced for a month and the former has had two runs in that time. Contessa Vanessa is better than a one-win filly clearly and from an Oaks perspective it was hard not to notice Larima sustaining a strong finishing run from well back. The manner of the Savvy Coup win and the time clocked are both big ticks but it needs to be tempered with the reality that so far this has been a season of suspect 3yo form for both sexes. Hasahalo absolutely demolished Dijon Bleu at G1 in November so has these today well covered it would appear.
