Liquorland Gore Guineas (LR)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

The Listed 3yo 1335m saw the fourth longest price in the race beat the third longest price in a blowout for bettors. Raise You Ten had won a maiden at his last start and was coming back 65m and only down half a kilo but rising in grade substantially. The gelding after racing fourth of fifth the outer took a while to wind up but kept coming and led at the 50m to win by a neck in 1:21.46 and record his second win from just five starts. He looks like middle distance will not be a concern as he seems to be able sustain his finish admirably. Showmeup came from third last on settling with a big finish down the outer and grabbed second money the final 10m. Starvoia the clear favourite had every chance sitting behind the leaders and got off in enough time to win but could not prevail and was tad disappointing in that regard. What Choux Want was wide near the pace throughout and went up to lead before the home turn to wilt late unsurprisingly, so the effort was commendable in the big picture of the race. Shirley Maude a maiden and the second outsider in the field put some reality into the race result when running home for fifth beaten just over two lengths from second last on settling, after being tardy at the start. The filly had paid a dividend once before when third in a Listed race as a juvenile, so seems to perform better when out of her grade and depth. Wonder Woman wilted a tad after sitting second the outer while the second favourite Don Carlo got back on the inner but fought on fairly late. Strowan led up and punctured while Midnight Gossip was midfield and wide the whole way and never ran on at all. Residential and Play For Time were both poor but the slow track conditions looked like hampering both these fillies. This was a dubious result in many ways as the wet and tight rack at Gore was very tricky for many runners. The winner Raise You Ten has improvement to come while Starvoia should have been able to put these away, so an asterisk goes on her as she has disappointed in two races that came over more than 1200m to date. What Choux Want with a less overland trip probably would have won rather than finish fourth. Shirley Maude was a good effort and she puts the race into proper perspective in what she was able to do for a maiden after a tardy getaway. Wonder Woman, Don Carlo and Midnight Gossip all disappointed overall and are better than that surely so it had to be a mixture of the footing and trip in transit. Whether this form will stand up at roomier tracks such as Riccarton, Wingatui or Ashburton remains to be seen.
