The Craigmore Timaru Cup (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This Listed mile was not strongly run overall and saw the topweight Tommy Tucker after racing handy the inner get up and beat the leader a nose. Tommy Tucker under 60kg got up in the last stride to defend the title he won here a year ago when carrying 1kg less. It was the thirteenth win in forty-three starts for the 8yo and made if three Listed wins now and they go with a G3 placing. The time of 1:36.16 was the third slowest time of the day and only a maiden event was worse in 1:36.88, so it was not a testing gallop at all. Pepper Mill after taking the lead 1000m from home had 6kg on his conqueror and controlled the race pace so no excuses. Bloodstream freshened up ran home well for third and when back up to his more favoured middle distance will start that winning run again. Coulee fought on well for fourth after working to the lead than taking the trail. Aspen Lass was seen running on well the inside from eighth or ninth on settling while the evergreen 12yo El Chico fought on okay for sixth beaten just over two lengths. Nashville ran home well too late and was a track and tempo bias victim as almost every winner on the day trailed or came from no worse than fifth turning for home bar the opening event maiden winner. There was just six and a half lengths from first to last at the line so nothing was disgraced. Several future winners should come from this as most runners did not have a hard trip at all and that was more due to the track bias but also the race time not helping the hands dealt to many either.
