James & Annie Sarten Mem Stks (G2)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This G2 3yo 1400m and in fact whole meeting was affected by a very awkward wet track and scratchings so the results are dubious to say the least. Sumstreetsumwhere a last start winner against his own age group at set weights and penalties handled the rise today under set weights to score. The gelding sat sixth wide and moved up deeper the run home before taking the lead loving the off wet ground before holding on to win by a neck in 1:24.74. It was his second win in three starts and while the footing has cut in it or is wetter then he can keep improving. As You Will, a maiden, powered home from the rear trio and almost won to give the result that asterisk of dubiousness but at least prior he had placed third behind his conqueror again to give some form thread linkage. Hard Merchandize ran third beaten over a length and a half having won at G2 last start on wet ground, after sitting third in the running throughout. Lincoln Hills fought on stoutly for fourth after settling well back and his rain-affected form is in and around the same players it seems. Bostonian ran home well after settling well back and the usual on pacer was also hampered and forced out the second widest runner turning for home. He had finished second prior at G2 on wet ground behind the third finisher today so once again the form is all linked by rain-affected footing and has a distinct dry track doubt about it all. Xbox showed dash before wilting while Star Treasure did not ping the run home. Irish Flame battled on from the rear and is a known wet tracker. Athletica was forced the widest runner on the home turn and battled on but he has been found out at G2 now in his last two outings against the same usual suspects. The well supported pair of Gift Of Power and Gingernuts finished third last and second last in career worst performances, so the track clearly was awful for many runners today. Vincent the maiden choked down and will wear a tongue tie next time out and is a maiden winner in waiting. A lot of these runners have been racing each other on wet ground and not one of them is remotely dominant so it looks like the depth is not there and once on better footing many of them will be found out for sure. The 3yo crop so far looks wet track form bar the flying filly Prom Queen so the real scope has not been exposed yet and very few of this age have yet to run on genuine firm or better footing. When they keep having turns depending on track bias and field size or barrier draw then the sameness of their ability becomes a negative regarding depth. The choice is stark as they are either all good as a group or all average and the latter is the logical because it only happens once in a generation if that when so many of the same age are so good at the same time. The G1 1000 and G1 2000 Guineas at Riccarton next month will sort out some of the pecking order and hopefully is run on dry ground for once this season but it will not clear up the whole 3yo picture.
