Wanganui Guineas (LR)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This Listed 1340m 3yo event produced the highlight of the day and a winning margin very rarely seen at Stakes level over short distances especially, when Cooga Doon scored by nine lengths. The track had a clear bias towards on pacers and the insides lanes all day with seven of the nine winners being no worse than a close up fourth turning for home and four of them led turning for home. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were co-leader (one off the inside), fourth (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), eighth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), led (four-off the inside by a head), led (two-off the inside and a length ahead), sixth (four-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (two-off the inside and a length ahead) and second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader). Cooga Doon had won his debut by seven lengths so clearly loves a bit of daylight and today he was wide near the pace early then went on with it to lead across the top before swimming right away the final 200m. The gelding won by nine lengths, a margin not only as rare as hen's teeth at Blacktype level over short trips but in fact as rare as hen's fillings. He can sustain speed and runs through the line and has never tasted defeat either on raceday or at the trials. Just what he beat today is debatable overall at this juncture and maybe wet track form and some of course need a lot more distance before shining but the gap is the eyecatching fact. His dam won seven races up to and including 2400m and had no top of the ground problems so there is hope indeed this gelding can display his ability on better underfoot conditions. Sai Fah was looking to start the favourite in this but a tsunami of money came for the winner late and justifiably so. Sai Fah the already three-race winner got humiliated today big time by Cooga Doon. He sat outside the winner then got left eating his pumice loam dust literally. Wanganui is the oldest race track in New Zealand with 1848 its first raceday so has natural sandy-based drainage. Sai Fah may be just a wet tracker with dash on conditions to suit but getting beaten that far today when a length away turning for home and 300m latter another eight lengths behind is a reality check. Blue Rata Elgius ran third and was over thirteen lengths from the winner after racing fourth the outer and he is by the same wet track sire as the runner up. This gelding got beaten almost ten lengths by a rising star in Catalyst on dead ground before today and that runner is the benchmark 3yo at the moment. Checkers fresh up finished fifth beaten almost sixteen lengths but is an improver once the trips gets longer and the footing gets better and is not so testing. The rest got beaten twenty lengths and up to over fifty-eight lengths , which is difficult to comprehended in just a 1340m race so either the winner is very special or they have a hard row to hoe from now on. The margins were staggering in this one race and all eyes will be on Cooga Doon when he reappears next especially if it happens to be on dead or better footing. Sooner or later there will be a matching of 3yo motors between Catalyst and Cooga Doon and even throw in Double Impact too for some form spice to add into the galloping Group gumbo.
