The O'Learys Fillies Stakes (LR)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This Listed 3yo fillies only 1200m even saw a maiden capture the spoils in Riva Capri at just her second ever start. The track had a clear bias towards on pacers and the insides lanes all day with seven of the nine winners being no worse than a close up fourth turning in and four of them led turning for home. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were co-leader (one off the inside), fourth (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), eighth (seven-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), led (four-off the inside by a head), led (two-off the inside and a length ahead), sixth (four-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (two-off the inside and a length ahead) and second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader). Riva Capri was a brave second on debut and with an ounce of luck may have won but today she used a good gate properly and trailed the leaders. She worked off near the home turn and came through and led at the 200m then had a lone threat and after a ding donger the closing stages won a by half a head in 1:16.85. The time was barely faster than the maiden held two races prior and a Benchmark 65 ran just under a length superior directly before but the head scratcher is an Open Handicap later in the day only clocked .02 faster, so the track got worse as it was opened up. Obviously it was her first win and came at a first try in Stakes class and the wet ground clearly aided her cause. Trifolium tried to maintain her unbeaten on raceday record and after leading early then sat second before taking over turning for home and was headed at the 200m only to refuse to lose at the 100m. She fought hard and in a ding donger just missed. All her form so far has come on rain-affected footing so when the tracks dry out then a more certain level can be afforded the filly that has tactical speed. Sorrentina, another maiden filly and stablemate of the winner, ran third at her debut from a tricky barrier and gained Blacktype. She settled back then came through sixth across the top and reached fifth turning for home then produced a solid finish to get third with 50m to go. This filly has more upside than the winner and likely a wider range of footing that she is able to cope and compete on. She's A Lady the equal favourite raced third the outer then moved up wide across the top to home turn poised to strike but she was unable the ping the closing 200m and ended up fourth beaten just under four lengths. Miss Sweet Pea led up and then headed turning for home then weakened out to finish fifth and she clearly would prefer improved footing. Sweet Clementine did nothing the run home from sixth the outer and was disappointing but she did race too keen fresh up so another outing is needed to assess her properly. Flaunting was a flop as co-favourite after being tardily away she never looked a possibility. She had won on this track last season at Listed level so on her record overall deserves another chance. Dubai's Moko the rank outsider was outclassed but would be a threat in a straight maiden line up as she was beaten only just over eight lengths in this. Glamour was a major flop after sitting back and wide then improving near the home turn but she was going nowhere and still second last and the deepest turning in. The fact she gave it in to finish last and be beaten almost ten lengths is concerning but she like a few in this is needs to be seen on top of the ground before her pecking order is logged in. The footing presented and bias did not help this result but regardless the fact two maiden fillies and one of them was on debut, could run one and three in this says more about the opposition. It looked a speedy but legitimate Listed field on paper only to see numerous flops and underperformance so that asterisk of doubt is still in play after today.
