Another treble

3 minute read

After a slow start to the season trainer John Keys (who has taken over most of the Scott Brunton team) is starting to launch an assault on the trainers premiership moving to third, just two off the pace after another treble in Hobart on Sunday. It’s the second consecutive Hobart meeting where Keys has trained three winners.

In a bunched leader board, John Blacker 19 heads the premiership with Glenn Stevenson 18, John Keys and Adam trinder are on 17.

Keys winners' started with I'm So Cool ($8.00 – $4.00) who may have earned himself a tilt at some of the better races over summer with a dominant win in the BM70, (2100m).

Taken straight to the front, the 5yo gave nothing else a chance, kicking away at the top of the straight to win by 5.5 lengths, running the last 600m in a slick 34.57 seconds.

"He won that very well under his own steam, he's a bit of a goose, he wants to look about in the run but he came out an won very classily today," jockey Chelsea Baker said.

The race was originally scheduled for Launceston last Wednesday night but was postponed after heavy rain hit the course.

Keys was off to a flier with an early double thanks to Turf Puzzle ($3.70) leading virtually all-the-way to win the Maiden (1200m). The lightly raced 4yo mare was headed by outsider Creek Lodge ($51) in the home straight but fought on strongly to pull clear to win.

The veteran trainer made it three for the day in the BM60 (1100m) when Thunberg ($7.00) was given a peach of a ride by Erica Byrne Burke who after jumping away well tucked the mare in behind the the leaders before racing clear in the final 200m to win impressively.

"It was a little bit keen early, a bit of a speed battle so I tried to get her to settle as good as she could and I think that was the winning move she really kicked to the line well," Byrne Burke said.

After hitting the front halfway down the straight, Thunberg raced clear to win by 1.75 lengths from Champagne Cinders ($26) with Gee Gee Goldenlass ($23) a close third.
