Big Memory was taken forward from his low draw to settle down in second position. The three-year-old Northwest Passage was taken to a clear lead turning out of the straight the first time, with Big Memory taken to the outside of the leader settling nicely with his head low. Luke Currie put some pressure on the leader racing up to his quarters at the 1200m before taking the lead on turning for home. He maintained his effort the whole way down the straight going clear at the 250m before being headed inside the final 100m to then fight back to get his nose down on the line. Cadillac Mountain settled down in eighth position one off the fence about ten lengths from the early leader. He travelled well into the race poised to challenge between horses approaching the home turn. He made his move on turning for home looming up at the 300m before hitting the front inside the final 100m, looking the certain winner but the winner kicked right on the line to deny him victory.
