The Charlie Appleby-trained Godolphin stayer Qewy put up solid effort in winning at his Australian debut. He began well, soon went to the front and then travelled particularly well at a good tempo. He was challenged nearing the home turn but then kept fighting back gamely in the straight to score well, in a good staying performance. Grey Lion, another European-stayer, was second all the way. He put pressure on the leader (Qewy) coming to the home turn and battled very well for second, also putting up a really solid effort at this first run in this country. The winner’s stablemate, Oceanographer was back in seventh place, got to fifth at the home turn and kept making ground, finishing well nearing the post to take a good third. The Chris Waller-trained Kinema was a handy third to the home turn and kept battling on soundly to hold fourth, beaten three lengths.
