The Phillip Stokes-trained colt Captain Duffy put up a very good trial for the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on Saturday week, staging a good performance in winning here. He began well from his outside barrier (16) and after working out wide, he settled in third place (but three wide without cover) before moving to be outside the leader (Theanswermyfriend) at the 800m. He got to the front approaching the home turn, held a good break at the 200m and then fought back gamely to win well, putting up a most impressive staying effort. The Paul Perrytrained Hollywood Mo had a good trip in fifth place but was under riding at the home turn. He got to third and kept battling on soundly to take second in a photo. The SA-trained filly Pretty Punk was seventh on the rails, got a split at the home turn, went to second at the 200m and kept fighting on for third, just missing second in a photo. Tumultuous was near last in the 16-horse field and made good late ground for (1.5 lengths) fourth, without looking a winning chance while the favourite Theanswermyfriend led at quite a good pace until the 600m but disappointed, weakening to finish (9.2 lengths) 11th.
